Cold fusion
Since 1997, Pirelli Labs devotes a small budget to selected and qualified activities focused on the controversial topic of "Cold Fusion", a scientific endeavor which is coming back after a period of nearly total refusal by the international community.
Following in part the route opened by theoretical developments, e.g. the coherent quantum electrodynamics model, Pirelli Labs has investigated some possible implementation of the technique showing the possibility of observing, albeit in a random fashion so far, unconventional effects of excess heat generation.
The activities are now merged in a three-year, joint workplan with ENEA started in 2006. A replication of ENEA technology of laser assisted plasmon excitation of the phenomenon in electrolytic cells is going to be done. The objective of the program is the observation of possible excess energy produced in a suitable electrolytic cell, to check for the presence of nuclear reactions, in particular those produced by nuclear fusion of deuterium nuclei.
