Telemedicine

New opportunities and fields for application were open by technological development of data transferring methods. Telemedicine is un of these fields. Its importance is due to its great development potential and its high social impact.  Diagnosis time and monitoring of after surgery development can be relevantly reduced by means of direct communication of biometric data to high specialized structures from the patient or indirectly from low level structures.

An innovative apparatus (figure) was developed by Pirelli Labs in collaboration with Telecom Italia and Elettronica Trentina Medical Devices. It allows monitoring in real time the health status of a cardiopathic patients by means of a GSM mobile phone. Device functionality is controlled by a doctor through a web appliance using SMS tools, developed by Pirelli Labs.

The good results obtained are pushing for the extension of the concept to other medicine area like neurology and pneumology. At the moment a collaboration with Istituto Neurologico C. Besta in Milan is going to realize telemetry of encephalographic data, based on ZigBee protocol that will probably find al lot of application fields.
