Physico-Chemical Characterization & Reliability

The Physico-Chemical Characterization & Reliability laboratory has a twofold mission in Pirelli Labs organization as a support to most development projects.

The first one is to ensure extensive experimental capabilities for the physical and chemical  characterization of different materials and components, which is crucial all through the development of any new materials, devices, processes. This implies the availability of a large number of established analytical and testing techniques, as well as the ability to develop new methods, all combined with a strong background knowledge in materials science.

The second is to provide the full reliability assessment of components and devices that are the outcomes of a number of PLabs projects, especially, although not limited to, those concerning photonics applications. This consists in making "a priori" evaluations based on the knowledge of materials and technologies, in using special computational tools, and in setting up and managing suitable experimental tests.

Among the specialistic skills of this group, worth mentioning is the capacity to apply "Failure Analysis" methods, either established or "customized", to materials and components.
